I was invited by Simryn Gill to speak at the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station as part of her work for the Singapore Biennale in 2006. It gave me a chance to remember those rainy childhood hours daydreaming and waiting for the train to pass by the bridge at my home in Upper Bukit Timah Road. When we moved house, the train tracks were again in sight from our flat near Tanglin Halt. I also used to travel a lot on the train to visit relatives in Malaysia, which was something I shared with Simryn. The talk was truly atmospheric, and a good crowd showed up for my ramblings. The highlight must have been the unplanned arrival of a passenger train in front of the audience, and whose deafening machinations and arriving folks momentarily made it real.
