U.S. playwright Eugene O’Neill’s 1920 play was restaged at Fort Canning at its gate structure. I worked with the director to use its spaces for the various scenes, as well as to design the various props required for a strong performance by Tan Boon Hui, who played the African-American Brutus Jones. I had to design the tiered audience seating as well, since there was no proper area for this. The outdoor setting of the old fort made this an unforgettable design experience.
